Cold calling still works for reps who show up prepared. The hard part isn't dialing. It's knowing what to say in the first ten seconds, handling the brush-off without sounding defensive, and leaving a voicemail someone actually returns.
ChatGPT (or Claude, or Gemini) won't make the dials for you, but it can cut your prep time and give you a practice partner before every calling block. Here are seven prompts that help individual reps cold call with more confidence.
Before you start
The more context you give, the better the output. Have three things ready: who you're calling (title, industry, company size), what you sell and the outcome it creates, and one proof point you can say out loud. Always review what the AI writes and put it in your own words. AI drafts, you sell.
1. Find the angle for your call list
I'm cold calling [TITLE]s at [TYPE OF COMPANY] with about [EMPLOYEE COUNT] employees. List the 5 most common problems they face that [MY PRODUCT] solves, ranked by how urgent they usually are. For each one, give me a single question I could ask to find out if it applies to them.
2. Write permission-based openers
Write 3 permission-based cold call openers for [TITLE]s at [TYPE OF COMPANY]. Each should be under 20 seconds, admit that this is a cold call, give one specific reason I'm calling, and ask for 30 seconds to explain. No fake familiarity and no "how are you today?"
3. Build a 30-second problem statement
Write a 30-second problem statement for [TITLE]s that describes the problem [MY PRODUCT] solves in plain language. Mention a typical result like [PROOF POINT] and end with an open question that invites them to talk about their own situation.
4. Handle the brush-offs
List the 6 most common brush-offs [TITLE]s give on cold calls, such as "not interested," "send me an email" and "we already have a vendor." For each, write a calm one-sentence response and a follow-up question that keeps the conversation going. No pushy tactics.
5. Leave voicemails that get callbacks
Write 3 voicemail scripts under 25 seconds for [NAME], [TITLE] at [COMPANY]. Reference [TRIGGER EVENT, SUCH AS A NEW HIRE, FUNDING OR EXPANSION]. Give them one clear reason to call back and repeat my number twice: [PHONE NUMBER].
6. Role-play before you dial
Role-play as a busy [TITLE] at a [INDUSTRY] company who is getting a cold call from me. Be realistic and a little impatient, and raise at least one objection. After the call, score my opener, problem statement and objection handling from 1 to 10 and tell me the one thing to fix first. Start when I say hello.
7. Turn call notes into next steps
Turn these notes from a cold call into a short CRM entry (summary, pain points, next step with date) and a follow-up email under 100 words that recaps what we discussed: [PASTE NOTES].
How to use these in a calling block
Ten minutes before your block, run prompts 1 to 3 for the segment you're calling. Role-play twice with prompt 6. Then dial, and log every live conversation with prompt 7 so nothing falls through the cracks. Keep the brush-off responses from prompt 4 open on your screen.
